Summit of Mt. Shasta (May 2022)

I summited Mount Shasta in California at 14,180 feet above sea level on May 22, 2022. This was an achievement that I worked towards for years. I failed the first attempt years before due to having more ambition than planning. But pain + reflection = progress. Ultimately, I hit the summit with the help of my good friend from high school as a celebration for my first child expected a few months later.

Onward and upward.

I love backpacking and camping. It provides real world challenge, which I crave, and a great sense of peace once you detach from normal, busy life. If I can't make it to the redwoods of the California coast, you can find me in the Sierra Nevada mountains under a tree somewhere.

My trusty companion, Oliver the dog, stands guard at the tent, protecting it from squirrels and other ne'er-do-wells.

Ultra running

Doing hard things trains the mind. I like to do at least 1 very hard thing per year - something I am not sure I can accomplish. Ultrarunning is the best form of this I know since the mind tends to break before the body and you have to find the willpower to override your instincts and keep going.

This is a screenshot from my longest run on March 29, 2025 - a 51 mile loop.

It was beautiful and painful.

Family

I have a wonderful family with my wife, Abby, and 2 young daughters.
